Dealing With Resistance
Do you ever set a goal for yourself but you find it almost impossible to stick to that goal?
You are most likely dealing with resistance.
Resistance is the invisible force that keeps you from achieving your goals. An example of a goal would be a goal to eat healthier. If you find trouble in trying to achieve this goal, the resistance in this case could be as simple as your affinity to junk food or as complex as your relationship to food because food gave you comfort when you weren't able to cope with your emotions any other way. These two possible sources of resistance are just a few of possibly many. When you find yourself consciously wanting to achieve certain goals and feeling resistance to them there is some possible limiting belief, emotion, or situation that is keeping you from achieving your goal.
What you need in feeling any resistance would be to slow down and feel all the feelings you have and pay attention to the thoughts that run through your mind. This may be difficult at first but I promise you this is so so worth it. A way to slow down that has been effective for me is to journal about your feelings. Pay attention to your emotional state - do you feel anxious? Do you feel like you're doing something bad? Do you feel like a bad person?. Look at all the narratives that exist in your head and just write them all out. When you're done reflect and see any if any of these thoughts are not helping you with your goal. Are you shaming yourself? Are you falling victim to negative self talk? Take a look at what comes up and see which beliefs and thoughts you need to let go of.
I hope you know that this type of work is not easy. It will be hard at first and expect to feel awkward and weird. As humans we have as many as 70,000 thoughts a day and 60,000 of those thoughts are automatic. If we don't take the time to cultivate and internal dialog with our subconscious we fall into our old patterns and fail to create new habits that serve us. If we are not aware of our own mindset and limiting beliefs we will stick to our old habits and any impactful change will not happen.
